Clothes

When you think about packing, most likely the first thing that pops into your head is clothing. Clothes are probably the most important thing you’ll pack for your trip, but the tricky part is knowing what clothes you’ll need.

If you’re not sure what the weather will be like, the best thing to do is pack layers. Layers also come in handy for climates where the temperature is cooler in the morning and warmer later in the day. Pack a few long sleeve shirts or a lighter jacket, jeans, and some lighter shirts. You may feel as though you’re packing too much, but if you’re staying somewhere where the weather is unpredictable, you’ll be glad you did.

Underwear and Socks

Technically, this falls under the category of clothes but socks and underwear are among some of the most frequently forgotten items when preparing for a trip. It’s always a good idea to pack enough underwear and enough pairs of socks for every day of the trip plus a couple extras. If you really want to go above and beyond, pack a spare set of each in your carry-on if you are traveling by plane, or whatever bag you’ll have with you most of the time. This may sound a little excessive, but if something happens and your main luggage is lost, you will be happy you have a fresh change of underwear and a new pair of socks for later.

Shoes

When packing only the essentials, shoes are the most cumbersome. How many pairs will you need? What activities will you be doing and what shoes will be necessary for each activity? The list goes on and on. It’s always a safe bet to pack a pair of good walking shoes. If you’re going to a new place, you will most likely spend majority of the time walking around and exploring. If you’re traveling for business reasons, you will want a nice pair of shoes to go with you business attire. Any other shoes you decide to pack will depend on activities you have planned for your trip or your reason for going. When in doubt, less is more when it comes to packing shoes. The less shoes you pack, the more room you’ll have for other necessary items or souvenirs from your trip.

Toiletries

Though toiletries may not be the first thing on your mind after clothing when it comes to packing, they are still necessary to have on hand. Traveling takes a lot out of a person and a hot shower after a long day on the road, or in the air, can do wonders. However, if you forget to pack shampoo, conditioner, soap, or even your toothbrush, it could be a long trip unless you find a store where you can pick up some replacements.
